Procedure

To a stirred mixture of phenol (0.83 g) and 4-(piperidin-4-yloxy)benzaldehyde (2 g) in dry benzene (20 ml), 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (1.58 g) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 12 h. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc, washed with H2O, dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The crude product was chromatographed on silica gel using 5 to 15% (gradient elution) ethyl acetate in petroleum ether to afford 1.9 g (61%) of the title compound.
