Procedure

To a stirred suspension of the product (4 g) obtained in example 1 in methanol (40 ml) at room temperature, magnesium turnings (3.8 g) were added and the reaction mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 1 h. The reaction mixture was added to ice water (20 ml), the pH was adjusted to 6.5-7.0 using 10% aqueous hydrochloric acid and the solution was extracted with chloroform (3×100 ml). The combined organic extract was washed with H2O, dried (CaCl2) and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residual mass was chromatographed on silica gel using 0.4% methanol in chloroform to give 2.4 g (68%) of the title compound. mp 72°-74° C.
