Procedure

3-Propanoyl-4-(2-methylphenylamino)-8-(2-methylthioethoxy)quinoline (0.10 g, 0.26 mmol) was dissolved in methylene chloride (5 ml). NaHCO3 (45 mg) in H2 0 (5 ml) was added. The mixture was cooled to 4° C. A solution of 71% m-CPBA (0.062 g, 0.25 mmol) in methylene chloride (5 ml) was added dropwise. After stirring for 1 h at 2°-4° C., the organic layer was washed with a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Chromatography (SiO2 ; CH2Cl2 :EtOH 90:10) gave 50 mg (48%) of the desired product.
