Procedure

5-[(5-Nitrothiazol-2-yl)mercapto]tetrazole (2.44 g) is dissolved in 20 mL of dimethyl formamide, or a mixture of dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide, containing 1.4 g of potassium carbonate and 1.3 g of methyl iodide. After stirring overnight the mixture is diluted with 40 ml of water. The precipitate is collected by vacuum filtration, dried and purified by high performance liquid chromatography on a reversed phased C-18 column using a gradient of acetonitrile in water to give 0.5 g of the title compound.
