Procedure
2-Bromo-5-nitrothiazole (2.09 g) and 1.32 g of 2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole in 10 mL of tetrahydrofuran are stirred at room temperature overnight, triethylamine is added to neutrality, and stirring is continued. The precipitated solid is dissolved in dichloromethane, washed with water, and the organic layer evaporated to give crude product. The crude product is crystallized from ethyl acetate/hexane to give 1 g of desired thiazole-thiadiazole compound as an off-white solid.
