To a solution of 2.5 ml of diisopropylamine in 20 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran at -78° C. was added 11 ml of a 1.6 M solution of butyllithium in hexanes. The solution was stirred for 20 min. then a solution of 1.15 g of 2-fluoropyridine in 3 ml of tetrahydrofuran was added. The solution was stirred at -78° C. for 30 min then a solution of 2-formylbenzaldehyde diethylacetal in 3 ml of tetrahydrofuran was added dropwise. This solution was stirred for 1 h then warmed to room temperature overnight. The reaction was poured into a 5% solution of sodium carbonate and extracted with two 300 ml portions of ether. The combined organic layers were washed with 300 ml of water then the same volume of brine and dried over sodium sulfate. Evaporation of the solvent afforded (2-fluoropyridin-3-yl)-2-(diethoxymethyl)-phenyl methanol as a viscous oil; 1H-NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3) d 5.60 (CHOEt).
