Procedure
A solution of 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenol (7.55 g, 0.0546 mol), TBSCl (8.22 g, 0.0546 mol) and imidazole (3.71 g, 0.0546 mol) in DMF was stirred for 18 h at room temperature. Water (200 mL) and ethyl acetate (200 mL) were added; the organic layer was separated and washed with water (2×100 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to produce the desired product as a clear oil which was used without further purification.
