To a stirred solution of monoethyl malonate 1(1.65 g, 12.5 mmol) in THF (25 mL) was added the magnesium ethoxide (0.61 g, 6.25 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at rt for 5 h (until the solution become clear). The result solution was used for next step without any treatment.
