A solution of 6-chloro-5-nitronicotinic acid methyl ester (1.0 g) [prepared as described by A. H. Berrie et al. J. Chem. Soc. 2590-2594 (1951)] in dichloromethane (10 mL) containing triethylamine (0.76 mL) was treated with mercapto-acetic acid methyl ester (0.44 mL) and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour and evaporated to dryness. Sodium bicarbonate solution was added and the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane, dried (anhydrous sodium sulfate) and evaporated to afford a solid (1.0 g). MS (ES) m/e 287 (M+H)+.
