3-Methyl-2-buten-1-OL → 3,7-Dimethylocta-2,6-Dienal
Reaction equation
[CH3:1][C:2]([CH3:6])=[CH:3][CH2:4][OH:5].[CH3:7][C:8]([CH3:12])=[CH:9][CH:10]=O>>[CH3:7][C:8](=[CH:9][CH2:10][CH2:1][C:2](=[CH:3][CH:4]=[O:5])[CH3:6])[CH3:12]Participants

Procedure
A mixture of 600 parts of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol and 300 parts of 3,3-dimethylacrolein is pumped through a reactor having a capacity of 150 parts by volume with a residence time of seven minutes. The reaction temperature is 250° C and the pressure is 150 atmospheres. The reaction mixture which has reacted is fractionally distilled and 91.5 parts of citral is obtained. This is equivalent to a yield of 51% of theory based on 3,3-dimethylacrolein at a conversion of 33%.
