Procedure
To a solution of 4-chloro-2-(3-hydroxypropyl)toluene (3.7 g, 20 mmol), triethylamine (40 mmol) and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (4 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL) was added acetic anhydride (15 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred for ca. 1 h at 0° C., diluted with water, and extracted with AcOEt. The extract was washed with diluted aqueous HCl and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to give quantitatively the title compound: 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ7.11 (bs, 1H), 7.07 (bs, 2H), 4.07 (t, 2H, J=7.2 Hz), 2.65 (dd, 2H, J=7.2, 8.1 Hz), 2.28 (s, 3H), 2.05 (s, 3H), 1.84~1.96 (m, 2H). 5) 2-(3-Acethoxypropyl)-4-chloro-6-nitrotoluene
