A solution of 25 g of 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropent-2-en-1-ol (Kitazume, T. and Ishikawa, N.J. Am. Chem. Soc., (1985), p. 5186) in 100 ml of ethyl acetate is shaken with 100 mg of platinum dioxide under a hydrogen atmosphere for 1 hour. Then, the catalyst is filtered off and distilled fractionating. At 133°-135° C., 22 g of 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoropentanol is obtained with 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 1.86 (m, H2), 2.18 (m, H1) and 3.75 (t, J=6.1 Hz, H1).
