Procedure

To a solution of 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (300 mg, 1.24 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (3 mL) stirred on an ice bath was added ethylmagnesium bromide (1.00 M solution in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran, 1.86 mL, 1.86 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was added with 1 M hydrochloric acid on an ice bath until pH became 7 or lower, and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=10:1) to obtain 1-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1-propanol (165 mg, 49%) as a colorless solid.
