Procedure

AlCl3 (26.7 g, 0.200 mol) was added in one portion to a stirred mixture of succinic anhydride (10.0 g, 0.100 mol) in bromobenzene (97.0 g) at −10° C. under N2 atmosphere. The reaction temperature was maintained at −10° C. for 1Hour and was then allowed to warm to room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and poured into ice water. HCl (1M) was added slowly until pH 5. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (150 mL×2). The combined organics were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was washed with ether to afford 4-(4-bromophenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid (16.0 g, 62%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO) δ 12.15 (br s, 1H), 7.90 (d, J=8.7, 2H), 7.73 (d, J=8.7, 2H), 3.22 (t, J=6.0, 2H), 2.55 (t, J=6.0, 2H).
