Procedure
Add a solution of LiOH.H2O (1.76 g, 41.9 mmol) in water (25 mL) to a rapidly stirred solution of 5-[4-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-phenyl)-thiazol-2-yl]-pentanoic acid methyl ester (2.69 g, 8.4 mmol) in dioxane (50 mL), stir at room temperature. After 1 hour, acidify to pH 1 with 5N HCl solution and cool under N2 in a refrigerator. Filter out solids and rinse with ice cold water. Dry solids in a vacuum oven overnight to afford the title compound (2.50 g, 96%). MS (IS) 308 (M+1)+.
