Procedure

28.9 g of 4-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenol was added to 50 ml of dioxane, and with stirring at 30° to 40° C., 13.8 g of potassium carbonate was added. The mixture was heated to 40° to 60° C., and 10.8 g of α-chloropropionic acid was added. The reaction was performed for 4 hours. The disappearance of the starting phenol was confirmed by gas chromatography, and the reaction product was poured into a suitable amount of water. Sodium carbonate was added to transfer the final product into the aqueous phase. The oily phase was separated and removed, and then hydrochloric acid was added to afford 20 g of a solid precipitate. The final product obtained had a melting point of 90° to 92° C.
