Procedure

4-Nitrobenzylbromide (21.6 g, 0.1mol) was added to a rapidly stirred suspension of 1,2,4-triazole sodium salt (9.1 g, 0.1 mol) in anhydrous DMF (100 ml) and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 16 h. Ethyl acetate (400 ml) was added followed by water (250 ml) and the layers separated. The organic phase was washed with water (3×250 ml), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with ethyl acetate to give the title-product (10.6 g, 52%); m.p. 98°-100° C. δ (360 MHz, CDCl3) 5.47 (2H, s, CH2) 7.40 (2H, d, J=9 Hz, Ar--H), 8.02 (1H, s, Ar--H), 8.18 (1H, s, Ar--H), 8.23 (2H, d, J=9 Hz, Ar--H).
