Procedure
A mixture of 3.56 g of Intermediate XV, 2.35 g of 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-piperazine, 2.76 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate and 1.66 g of potassium iodide in 25 ml of dimethylformamide was stirred at 100° C. for 6 hours. After cooling, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was taken up in 50 ml of water, stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, collected by filtration, washed with water and crystallized from 95% ethanol in the presence of a small amount of activated charcoal (for decoloring). The base was dissolved in 105 ml of boiling 0.086N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. After cooling, the crystallized salt was collected by filtration, giving 4.3 g of the title compound (m.p. 201°-203° C.).
