Procedure
Potassium carbonate (306 mg, 2.22 mmol) and tert-butylbromoacetate (330 μl, 2.22 mmol) were added to a solution of the benzonitrile of Example 15 (270 mg, 1.11 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (5 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at 50° C. under nitrogen and then evaporated to dryness. The resulting residue was partitioned between dichloromethane (15 ml) and water (15 ml). The organic layer was separated, and the aqueous layer was extracted twice more with dichloromethane (2×10 ml). The organic extracts were combined, dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a yellow oil. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel eluting with ethyl acetate:pentane (4:1, by volume) to provide the title compound as a colourless oil (295 mg, 75%).
