Ethyl 2-[4-(2-benzyloxy-5-bromobenzylamino)phenyl]butanoate (4.2 g) was diluted in a solution of methanol (20 ml) and THF (20 ml). A 2N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was added and the mixture stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours. The volume of solvent was reduced to half the original volume and water (20 ml) added. The mixture was acidified with 2N HCl to pH 3 and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 ml). The combined extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated and the residue was subjected to chromatography, eluting with 10% EtOAc/CH2Cl2, to give 2-[4-(2-benzyloxy-5-bromobenzylamino)phenyl]butanoic acid (yield 1.31 gum).
