Procedure

1050 mg of (2R,4R)-4-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-{2-[6-methyl-2-(2-phenylethyl)phenoxy]ethyl}pyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (c) above] were dissolved in 10 ml of ethyl acetate, and then 0.77 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate were added to the resulting solution. The solvent was then removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. 20 ml of ethyl acetate were added to the resulting solid substance, and the mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for about 10 minutes. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, and dried in vacuo, to give 1024 mg (yield 88%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 114°-115° C.
