Procedure

144 mg of (2R,4R)-4-hydroxy-2-{2-[4-methoxy-2-(2-phenylethyl)phenoxy]ethyl}-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (b) above] were dissolved in 5 ml of ethyl acetate, and then 0.10 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate was added to the resulting solution. The solvent was then removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The resulting oily substance was dissolved in 1 ml of methylene chloride, and diethyl ether was added to the solution until it became turbid. The turbid mixture was then allowed to stand at room temperature for about 10 minutes. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, and dried in vacuo, to give 137 mg (yield 86%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 63°-65° C.
