Procedure

552 mg of (2R,4R)-4-hydroxy-2-{2-[6-methoxy-2-(2-phenylethyl)phenoxy]ethyl}-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (b) above] were dissolved in 10 ml of ethyl acetate, and then 0.39 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate were added to the resulting solution. The solvent was then removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The resulting oily substance was dissolved in 10 ml of ethyl acetate, and allowed to stand at room temperature for about 10 minutes. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, and dried in vacuo, to give 424 mg (yield 70%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 70°-72° C.
