Procedure
770 mg of methoxymethyl {4-fluoro-2-[2-(4-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenyl} ether [prepared as described in step (a) above] were dissolved in 4 ml of ethyl acetate, and then 4 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate were added to the resulting solution, whilst ice-cooling. The resulting mixture was then allowed to stand at room temperature for 2 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and purified by silica gel column chromatography, using a 3:2 by volume mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate as the eluent, to give 631 mg (yield 96%) of the title compound as an oily substance.
