Procedure

1785 mg of methoxymethyl {4-fluoro-2-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)ethyl]phenyl} ether [prepared as described in step (a) above] were dissolved in 8 ml of ethyl acetate, and then 8 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate were added to the resulting solution, whilst ice-cooling. The resulting mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 2 hours, after which it was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and purified by silica gel column chromatography, using a 4:1 by volume mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate as the eluent, to give 1483 mg (yield 99%) of the title compound as an oily substance.
