Procedure
Alternatively, a solution of 4,6-dimethoxy-2-isopropylbenzimidazole (12.70 g, 57.66 mmol) and 48% HBr (100 mL) was refluxed for 3 hours, and then the solution was cooled to ambient temperature and concentrated. The resulting solids were dissolved in H2O (100 mL) and neutralized (NaHCO3). A brown precipitate formed which was isolated by filtration. The precipitate was dissolved in MeOH (100 mL), treated with charcoal and concentrated to afford 6-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-4-methoxybenzimidazole as a brown solid.
