A mixture of N-(1,3-dimethyl-pyrazol-5-yl) anthranilic acid (7 g, 0.03 mol) and POCl3 (40 ml) is heated on a steam bath for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is then poured into ice water (600 ml) and then basified with NH4OH. The mixture is extracted with ether (3×200 ml), and the combined ether layers are dried over MgSO4 and evaporated to afford 7.0 g of 1,3-dimethyl-4-chloro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline, m.p. 127°-129° C.
