Procedure

5.6 ml of ethylmercaptan are added to a suspension of 20.0 g of N-tert-butyl-2-chloro-5-nitrobenzenesulfonamide, 18.9 g of potassium carbonate and 100 ml of DMF at room temperature. After the mixture has been stirred for 3 hours, it is concentrated under a high vacuum. The residue is taken up in water and acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid (pH 1 to 2). The aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure. 21.25 g of the desired ethylmercaptan are thus obtained; melting point: 172° to 174° C.
