Procedure

A solution of 6,7-diaminobenzothiazole (1.3 g, 7.9 mmol) and oxalic acid dihydrate (1.3 g, 10.3 mmol) in 40 ml of 4M hydrochloric acid was refluxed on an oil bath for 11/2 h, and cooled. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and washed successively with water and ethanol to give 1.52 g (88%) of the title compound; m.p.>360° C.; IR (KBr): 1700 cm-1 ; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): ca. 6.3 (very broad s, 1H, OH), 7.40 (d, J=9 Hz, 1H, ArH), 7.87 (d, J=9 Hz, 1H, ArH), 9.33 (s, 1H, H-2), 12.07 (broad s, 1H, OH).
