200 g (0.825 mol) 2-Chloroethyl 2-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-hydrazinecarboxylate in 500 ml xylene are warmed to 80°, and added to a warm (80°) solution of 2-methoxyacetylchloride in 250 ml xylene, prepared in situ by treating 73.5 g (0.826 mol) 2-methoxyacetic acid in 250 ml xylene with 107.1 g (0.9 mol) thionyl chloride at 80° for 2 hours. The mixture is heated for 30 minutes at 80°, then worked up as described in Example 1a.
