A mixture composed of 23.8 g (0.1 mol) of 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, 28 g of aniline and 30 ml of dimethylacetamide was heated to 90° to 100° C. for 3 hours. After being allowed to cool, the reaction solution was poured into cold diluted hydrochloric acid, and the resulting yellow crystals were filtered off. The resulting salt of 3-nitro-4-phenylaminobenzenesulfonic acid was chlorinated under the same condition as in (1-b) to obtain 3-nitro-4-phenylaminobenzenesulfonyl chloride (3-b).
