A mixture of 0.30 g of potassium carbonate, 0.40 g of 2-chloro-4-sec-butoxyphenol, 0.37 g of p-fluorobenzyl bromide and 15 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide is stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture is poured into ice-water and extracted twice with 100 ml of ethyl acetate. The extracts are combined together, washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is subjected to silica gel chomatography to give 1-sec-butoxy-3-chloro-4-(4-fluorobenzyloxy)benzene.
