Procedure

To a solution of (S)-4-benzyloxazolidin-2-one (4.4 g, 25 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran (20 ml), cooled to -78° C., was added n-butyllithium (2.5M solution in hexane, 10 ml, 25 mmol) dropwise. Another 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran was added to facilitate stirring. A solution of ethoxyacetyl chloride (3.0 g, 25 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (5 ml) was added and the mixture was stirred at -78° C. for 30 minutes, then warmed to room temperature, poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined extracts were washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to a yellow oil (4.3 g, [α]D =56.7°).
