To a solution of tert-Butyl [2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl](2-oxoethyl)carbamate (0.95 g, 3.1 mmol) in MeOH (20 mL) was added ethyl aminoacetate hydrochloride (480 mg, 3.4 mmol), sodium cyanoborohydride (590 mg, 9.3 mmol) and a drop of acetic acid. The mixture was allowed to stir at RT for 16 hours. LC showed good reaction. The reaction was diluted with EtOAc, washed with aqueous sodium carbonate, dried over sodium sulfate, and purified by silica gel chromatography to furnish the title compound. LC-MS (IE, m/z): 393 [M+1]+.
