To a solution of ethyl 4-hydroxy-2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate, 3-a, (0.62 g, 2.7 mmol) in DMF (7 ml) were added benzyl chloride (0.5 g, 3.99 mmol) and Et3N (0.8 g, 7.97 mmol). The resulting mixture was then heated at 60° C. for 12 hours. Then the mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with water followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified on silica gel column with the eluent of ethyl acetate/petroleum ether=1/1 (Rf=0.7) to afford the compound, 3-b, (0.36 g, 42%).
