Procedure

To a solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-benzoic acid (9.9 g, 46 mmol) in DMF (100 mL) was added K2CO3 (7.6 g, 55 mmol) and CH3I (20 g, 140 mmol) slowly. After stirring at room temperature for 4 h, the solvent was removed under vacuum. The residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with brine and dried over Na3SO4. The solvent was removed under vacuum to afford 5-bromo-2-methylbenzoic acid methyl ester (8.6 g, 82%), which was used in next step without further purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.04 (d, J=2.1, 1H), 7.50 (d, J=2.1, 1H), 7.50 (dd, J=8.1, 2.1, 1H), 7.12 (d, J=8.1, 1H), 3.89 (s, 3H), 2.53 (s, 3H).
