Procedure
Acetophenone (4.92 mL, 42.2 mmol) was dissolved in toluene (50 mL). The reaction was cooled on an ice bath. LiHMDS (42.2 mL, 42.2 mmol) was added via syringe and the reaction was stirred for 2 min. Pent-4-enoyl chloride (4.66 mL, 42.2 mmol) was added and then the reaction was stirred for 2 more min. Hydrazine hydrate (8.18 mL, 169 mmol) was then added, along with AcOH (2 mL) and EtOH (2 mL). The reaction was warmed to room temperature and then heated in an oil bath to 80° C. for 1 h. After this time, the reaction was cooled and an extraction was performed (200 mL each of H2O and EtOAc). The aqueous layer was extracted again with EtOAc (200 mL). The combined organic layer was dried, concentrated, and the residue was purified by column chromatography to give the title compound (5.4 g) as a yellow oil. LCMS m/z=199.3 [M+H]+; 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 2.39 (q, J=7.28 Hz, 2H), 2.61-2.76 (m, 2H), 5.00 (d, J=9.98 Hz, 1H), 5.04-5.13 (m, 1H), 5.78-5.95 (m, 1H), 6.47 (s, 1H), 7.21-7.33 (m, 1H), 7.33-7.48 (m, 2H), 7.65-7.81 (m, 2H), 12.56 (s, 1H).
