A mixture of 4-methyl-[1,4]azaphosphinane-4-oxide (133 mg, 1.00 mmol), 5-fluoro-2-nitroanisole (340 mg, 2.00 mmol), K2CO3 (345 mg, 2.50 mmol), and DMF (5 mL) was heated to 50° C. After 2 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated and purified by silica gel chromatography (0-5% 7N ammonia in methanol:dichloromethane) to afford 1-(3-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)-4-methyl-1,4-azaphosphinane 4-oxide as a bright yellow solid (272 mg, 96% yield).
