A solution containing 1-(3-hydroxy-4-methylphenyl)urea (150 mg, 0.9 mmol) and ethyl 3-bromopyruvate (0.11 mL, 0.9 mmol) in dry DMF (3.611E) was heated at 60° C. for 6 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc and washed with brine and saturated NaHCO3 solution and the combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (hexane:EtOAc 6/4) to give the product in 50% yield (119 mg).
