To (2R,5R)-2-hydroxymethyl-5-methyl-piperazine-1,4-dicarboxylic acid di-tert-butyl ester (1.42 g, 4.3 mmol) in DCM (18.7 mL) was added Dess-Martin periodinane (1.83 g, 4.3 mmol) at room temperature. The reaction was stirred at this temperature for 1 h. Saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and sodium thiosulfate (1:1) was added and the solution extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic extracts were washed with saturated aqueous hydrogen carbonate and sodium thiosulfate (1:1) (3×), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to give the title compound (1.71 g, 96%) as a pale yellow solid, used without further purification. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 9.58 (1H, s), 4.78-4.08 (3H, m), 3.73 (1H, m), 3.39-3.06 (2H, m), 1.53-1.41 (18H, m), 1.18 (3H, t).
