To a solution of 3-chloro-5-cyanobenzyl 4-((tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino)piperidine-1-carboxylate (1.846 g, 4.69 mmol) in EtOAc (30 ml) at RT under nitrogen was added 4M HCl in Dioxane (11.72 ml, 46.9 mmol) and the suspension stirred for 20 hours. After 3 hours a further 5 ml of 4M HCl in Dioxan was added. The solid was filtered off and dried to afford the title product as the hydrochloride salt;
