Procedure

A mixture of 6-chloro-2-methoxy-nicotinamide (7.15 g, 38.3 mmol), 2-bromo-5-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (11.5 g, 57.5 mmol) and K2CO3 (15.9 g, 115 mmol) in dimethylformamide (60 mL) was heated to 110° C. for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with H2O (800 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (6×400 mL). The organic extracts were combined, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography (50-80% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to give the title compound as a light brown solid (5.19 g, 39% yield).
