Procedure

2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (10 g, 0.072 mol) was dissolved in acetonitrile (83 mL). To this solution was added NaHCO3 (9.1 g, 0.10 mol) and stirred for 5 min. Benzyl bromide (12.9 mL, 0.10 mol) was added in under an argon atmosphere. The reaction was heated to reflux for 16 h. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction was quenched by addition of distilled water, and the organic layer extracted into dichloromethane (3×50 mL), and organic layers combined, washed with water and brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated. The crude mixture was purified by column chromatography (Silica gel, 10%-20% EtOAc in hexane) to give 25 in 65% yield.
