Procedure

9.52 g (0.071 mol) of N-chlorosuccinimide are introduced, at a temperature of between 0° and 5° C., into 10 g (0.065 mol) of 2-butylimidazole-4-methanol in suspension in 200 ml of ethyl acetate. The mixture is stirred overnight while maintaining this temperature. The solution is filtered and the solid is washed with 20 ml of ice-cold ethyl acetate, drained and washed with water in order to remove traces of succinimide and starting product, and then dried.
