Procedure
A mixture of methyl [1-[4-phenoxyphenyl]hydrazino]acetate (Intermediate 76, 11 g, 0.004 mol), sodium cyanate (0.9 g, 0136 mol) and trifluoracetic acid (1 ml, 0.0124 mol) in dry toluene (15 ml) was stirred under nitrogen at room temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was poured into 8% sodium bicarbonate solution (75 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×75 ml). The organic extract was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give a pale yellow semi-solid. This was triturated with ether to give the title compound (Intermediate 77) as a white solid (0.6 g, 48%) m.p. 110°-113° C.
