Procedure

A slurry of acetamide (500 mg, 8.46 mmol, 1 eq.) was heated neat in 1,1-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylethanamine (5 mL) for 16 hours. The 1,1-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylethanamine was removed by roto-evaporation to afford (Z)-N-(1-(dimethylamino)ethylidene)acetamide (2-1) as a dark yellow oil.
