The 6-chloro-3-ethoxy-4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidin-1-ylbenzonitrile (0.045 g, 0.15 mmol) was taken up in methylene chloride (3.0 mL) and N,N-dimethylformamide (0.002 mL, 0.03 mmol) and cooled in an ice bath. The thionyl chloride (0.017 mL, 0.23 mmol) was added and the reaction was monitored by LC/MS. After stirring for 2 hrs the reaction was complete. The reaction was then taken up in ethyl acetate, washed with sodium bicarbonate, brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give crude 6-chloro-4-(1-chloroethyl)-3-ethoxy-2-pyrrolidin-1-ylbenzonitrile as a yellow oil (0.048 g, 100%). LCMS calculated for C15H19Cl2N2O (M+H)+: m/z=313.1; found 313.1.
