Procedure

A solution of tert-butyl 4-(hydroxy(phenyl)methyl)benzoate (1.4 g, 4.9 mmol) was dropped to the suspension of sodium hydride (237 mg, 5.9 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 mL) and then the mixture was stirred 0.5 hour. Then iodomethane (3.0 mL) was added to the mixture and stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The resultant mixture was concentrated to give a residue. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether/ethyl acetate=6:1) to give tert-butyl 4-(methoxy(phenyl)methyl)benzoate as a colorless oil (1.25 g, 86%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.95 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 2H), 7.42-7.31 (m, 7H), 5.28 (s, 1H), 3.39 (s, 3H), 1.58 (s, 9H).
