To a stirred solution of 3,5-dichlorobenzaldehyde (10 g, 57 mmol) in THF (250 mL) were added trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane (9.79 g, 69.2 mmol) and a catalytic amount of tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF). The reaction mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 8 h. After the reaction was deemed complete by TLC, the reaction mixture was diluted with 3 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) and then was stirred for 16 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with H2O and was extracted with ethyl acetate (EtOAc; 3×). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a liquid (8.41 g, 60%).
