A mixture of ethyl 3-methylenecyclopentanecarboxylate (900 mg, 5.84 mmol) and lithium hydroxide (280 mg, 11.67 mmol) in THF (15 mL) and water (6 mL) was heated at 65° C. for 18 hours. Analysis by TLC indicated that the starting ester had been completely consumed. The organic solvents were removed via rotary evaporator, and the remaining aqueous solution was freeze-dried to yield lithium 3-methylenecyclopentanecarboxylate. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CD3OD) δ ppm 4.84-4.73 (m, 2 H), 2.71-2.59 (m, 1 H), 2.57-2.35 (m, 3 H), 2.29-2.16 (m, 1 H), 2.01-1.91 (1 H, m), 1.84-1.72 (m, 1 H,).
